The BIG DANCE has arrived for our Women’s Division 1 Metro side !
The Women’s Metro Express steamed into the final with a win over Kingscliff on Wednesday night down in Murwillumbah.
There is no journey too far or track too rough to stop this bunch on their quest for a GF appearance 2 years running and a chance to make it two GF wins from 2 appearances (yes I went there) and Wednesday night put it to rest once and for all, same team, same result.
It was a great encounter with a dominant first half performance by the ladies going ahead from a corner with Zohra Mohtat putting herself in the right place at the right time at the back post after a pin point delivery from the legend Prue Donohoe. The ladies set their stalls out and pressured Kingscliff at every chance preventing them from playing to their strengths and still creating chances of their own.
Kingscliff also had their chances but determined defending and goalkeeping put out most of those fires and the ladies managed to get a second with a fine strike from Roberta (Bertie) Rangel to go 2- 0 up with about 20 left in the half. All credit to Kingscliff who then pushed to get something before the half time break and did have the majority of possession in those final minutes of the first half but could not convert and went in still at 2-0 down.
The second half started with Kingscliff starting strongly and having the majority of possession and getting themselves into dangerous areas but the ladies kept working hard to protect the lead they had. The game was deep into the final 30 minutes when Kingscliff found a threw ball that resulted in a collision in the box and a penalty. the drama did not end there with our keeper Bianca Beatty unable to continue after the collision and Prue Donohoe having to don the gloves and face the resulting penalty. Kingscliff then converted making it 2-1 with about 10 to go.
What a final 10 it was with both teams fighting to get it over the line when a free kick was awarded to Kingscliff 25 yards out and central, we all know the danger with this and yes the unthinkable happened. The initial shot parried by Prue onto the bar only to bounce out to a Kingscliff player 2-2 with minutes on the clock.
After a little confusion at the final whistle as to the format it was off to penalties and it had all you would expect from a shootout, a few of us in the stands nervously jigging with anticipation..
Penalty 1 – Kingscliff score (1-0)
Penalty 2 – Prue comes out of goal steps up and takes the first one, keeper saves ..then the assistant calls it, keeper moved off her line, retake and Prue made no mistake with the second (1-1)
Penalty 3 – Kingscliff score (2-1)
Penalty 4 – Maya Christopher (2-2)
Penalty 5 – Kingscliff score (3-2)
Penalty 6 – Zohra Mohtat (3-3)
Penalty 7 – SAVED PRUE DONOHOE (3-3)
Penalty 8 – Bonnie Bishop (3-4)
Penalty 9 – Kingscliff score (4-4)
Penalty 10 – For the win Bettie steps up and finds the top right corner to seal it for the Ladies !!!
Great game, well deserved win and well deserved ticket to the Big Dance again , bring on next Wednesday night !!!

Division 2 – One step closer to the BIG DANCE !
The night didn’t stop there with the Metro Men Division 2 side sealing their semi final spot with great a 5 – 1 win over Robina and a third place finish on the ladder and a well deserved spot in the Semi Final.
This sets up an epic night at Keith Hunt Park next Wednesday night with the lads taking on Musgrave in their semi final @ 6:15pm followed by the Metro Express v Musgrave in the Women’s Division 1 Grand Final @ 8pm.
The Metro Mens Division 1 unfortunately can’t make the finals but still had a 2-1 win over Tamborine Mountain and look set for a 5th place finish overall with 2 games to go, a solid effort by those lads also.
In the words of Meatloaf himself ‘Two out of three ain’t bad’… Well done to all 3 teams and all involved on their 2020 season.
Good Luck next week in the finals !
LETS GO BROADY !!!
